There is no debate that air flows through your water line along with the water. Water systems are designed with this in mind to prevent serious problems such as air blocks and hammering.

The real question is how much air? The amount is not constant and is affected by things such as system pressure, pressure fluctuations, temperature, turbulence, and by the design and condition of the water supply system. It can vary from a little to a lot at any given time.

Virtually all water utilities bill water consumption using meters that measure volume. These water meters measure the total volume of all fluids moving through the line, and because air takes up space, they measure both air and water - meaning you're paying water rates for that volume of air too!

The amount of money you will save is determined by many factors including: how much water you use; your utility supply pressure and the degree of pressure fluctuations; the flow rate through your supply line; and the amount of air in the supply line. The actual savings you will experience is very difficult to accurately predict.
